WORTHINGTON
Worthington was founded in 1803 by a Connecticut businessman and modeled after a New England town. The village of Old Worthington maintains its old Connecticut character today, with its picturesque business district, beautiful Village Green and small-town atmosphere.
Althought the city itself is still relatively small (only 5.6 square miles), the Worthington community and school district have grown around it to a population of more than 50,000. the school system is considered excellent and has 11 elementary schools, 5 middle schools including an the alternative Phoenix School and 3 high schools including an alternative high school. Many of Worthington's schools have been named National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence. Recently the Worthington Library was named the 2007 Gale/Library Journal Library of the Year.
Worthington's Parks and Recreation Department oversees 13 parks and offers a wide variety of programs ranging from swimming, tennis, summer day camps for children and exercise, crafts and dance classes for adults while the Griswold Center offers activities for seniors. The impressive new rec center offers two indoor pools, one for laps and one for family fun, a complete fitness facility, indoor track, gyms and classrooms. Miles of bike trails connect the Olentangy Bike Path, which runs along the Olentangy River, with Ohio State University and beyond.
The city attracts many visitors to its famous festivals, such as Worthington Market Day, the Worthington Arts Festival and the Taste of Worthington. Every Saturday in the summer and early fall, the Worthington holds one of the largest farm markets in Central Ohio (now continuing monthly in the winter) and there are free summer concerts on the Village Green.
