History
Located northwest of Columbus in Delaware County, Powell was founded in 1801 as Middlebury, after the Connecticut town the settlers had left. The name was later changed to honor Judge Thomas Powell, a prominent citizen. Recent growth and wise choices about growth led to Powell being named Money Magazine’s 18th best place to live in 2005
Neighborhoods
Essentially a bedroom community for Columbus, Powell offers a charming historic village area, and many attractive neighborhoods, beautiful parks, and an array of lovely developments at a variety of price points. Fast-growing, the city is also still building out, so many new homes or build-to-suit are also available. Most of Powell’s neighborhoods offer wide streets, sidewalks, and beautiful public landscaping.

From concerts in the park at the city center, to the bright lights and culture offered by the big city, Powell offers access to all the arts and culture you could want.
Shopping
A charming and quirky village center offers antiques, home décor, and opportunities to taste great food and wine. If you’re looking for a bigger selection for anyone’s taste, Polaris Fashion Place has an enormous array of shopping possibilities and is just east of Powell. Sawmill Road heading out of Powell also has many choices.
Dining
Local Roots is a well-known farm-to-table option, offering live music and outdoor dining weather permitting. Prohibition Gastro Lounge offers the best of pub food, exciting cocktails, and an extensive whiskey and bourbon collection. Powell offers fare from fine dining to New York style pizza and down-home diner food, it’s all right here.
Schools
Powell is part of Olentangy Schools, a highly rated and rapidly growing school system serving over 20,500 kids in 23 schools, with a 98.5% graduation rate. Olentangy offers a wide variety of AP and College Credit Plus courses. Village Academy is located in downtown Powell, and is a top-rated private k-12 school if your family is so inclined.
What’s special
Powell is an active, growing community with plenty of festivals, parades, and public gatherings. The Powell Recreation Center and the Powell Library offer lots of entertainment options with a small-town feel, while still having easy access to the capitol city amenities just a few minutes south.
