Northwest of Columbus between the Olentangy and Scioto Rivers, Upper Arlington was a planned community designed by Ben and King Thompson, local real estate developers in 1913. Their design style was heavily influenced by landscape architect William Pitkin, Jr., with curving tree-lined streets that feel more like a park or English estate instead of a typical suburban rectangular grid layout.
Old Arlington or the Historic District has that park-like feel with tree-lined, meandering streets and sizable lots for a suburb. This area also includes some of the eclectic little shops built around the same time.
River Ridge was developed north of Lane Avenue, post WWII, and has a more typical grid layout with smaller, GI-friendly housing, mainly ranch homes.
Northern UA went back to the original design style, but with homes built after 1960, the architecture trends toward more mid-century modern homes mixed in with the classic designs.
Upper Arlington is a thriving, friendly community with homes available in a variety of price points.
Arts & Culture
Located right next to the Ohio State University, Upper Arlington has access to the best of art, culture, music, and entertainment, along with the big city amenities just moments away in downtown Columbus.
The Shops on Lane Avenue were remodelled recently and offer a great deal of unique and desirable shopping, as does Kingsdale Shopping Center, Tremont Center, and The Mallway at Old Arlington. Plus, Columbus offers many more traditional malls and shopping areas.
From Bistros and coffee shops, to find dining and wine, Upper Arlington has an endless array of choices. From American to Japanese, and Organic to authentic Mexican, there’s something here for every taste.
Upper Arlington Schools serve nearly 6,000 students in 9 schools, and offer both traditional options such as early childhood education, AP classes and College Credit Plus, but they also offer alternative education options with more experiential and independent learning opportunities. UA also offers an award-winning athletics program.
Upper Arlington is one of the few completely planned communities in Central Ohio, from streets to schools to commercial districts, you can see the thought and design shine through. It’s a welcoming and unique area of Greater Columbus and deserves a close look by those searching for a permanent home in a community that was designed for convenience and enjoyment.
